How can I measure the polling rate my mouse actually delivers?

My mouse is advertised as 1000hz. Is there a way to check the report rate it actually delivers on my system, without special hardware? I'd like to distinguish two things: whether the mouse itself reports at the advertised rate, and whether the OS/USB path is delivering those reports. My understanding is the advertised number is a maximum, not a guarantee, and that wireless mice in particular can fall below it.
